Latin American Fund for Irrigated Rice (FLAR)

CIAT created the Latin American Fund for Irrigated Rice (FLAR), a public-private partnership in 1995 to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of rice production. The Fund has since evolved into a strong regional organization encompassing 36 public and private sector partners in 17 countries, which influences two-thirds of the 5.7 million hectares sown to paddy rice in Latin America and about 80% of the 27.8 million tons produced.

How we do it: Collaborating for food and income security

FLAR joins diverse organizations across the rice value chain in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela, including CIAT as a strategic partner.

Our impact

Since FLAR’s establishment, it has developed more than 40 improved varieties that offer high yields with excellent grain quality and disease resistance.

FLAR has increased average rice yields by as much as 2 tons per hectare.
