Environmental assessments of livestock systems using CLEANED

CLEANED (Comprehensive Livestock Environmental Assessment for Improved Nutrition, a Secured Environment and Sustainable Development along Livestock Value Chains) is an ex-ante tool that assesses environmental impacts of livestock systems and value chains.  It evaluates land requirements, productivity, water use, soil health, economics and greenhouse gas emissions.

The tool was developed by CIAT, ILRI and partners through initial funding from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of a pilot project in assessing environmental impacts on livestock production systems. As a result of population growth and shifting dietary patterns, the demand for livestock products is expected to rise. The predicted demand increase poses a danger that the necessary rise in livestock production could become unsustainable. It is important to assess current and future environmental impacts of the livestock value chains and use the assessment results to inform livestock development.

CLEANED has been applied to a number of projects in sub-Sahara Africa. Send a cow collaborated with a team of experts from CIAT to assess land requirements for a dairy cow under different feeding regimes and explored the trade-offs between these strategies in four counties in Western Kenya using CLEANED model. The tool has also been used in Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Honduras and Vietnam to assess the environmental impacts in dairy, beef and dual-purpose cattle value chains.

Expected outcomes include:

Environmental concerns are considered when designing livestock development/investment programs and policies.

Government agencies and development partners at local and national levels are promoting sustainable livestock development practices.
